On behalf of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Ergon undertook an investigation of human resource systems and practices at an Indian manufacturing company to assess compliance with relevant labour regulations and IFC Performance Standards. This followed the discovery of serious non-compliances with policies on labour and working conditions.
This work initially involved a detailed benchmarking exercise between the IFC Performance Standards on labour and working conditions and national and local labour regulations and practices. In a second phase, Ergon visited the company’s facilities accompanied by IFC social specialists and conducted a series of interviews with company senior management, site supervisors and workers including off-site group interviews. This enabled us to gather reliable, triangulated information that we could benchmark against IFC Performance Standards and ensure management buy-in in implementing further improvements and developing sound HR practices.
The result of this assessment was presented in a report allowing the IFC and its client to identify the gap between national/local legislation and the standard requirements and providing an analysis of the company’s current practices, issues identified and key recommendations.
