DFID Labour Standards Forum
Ergon is now organising and facilitating the regular meetings of the Labour Standards and Poverty Reduction Forum set up by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The Forum meets every six months and brings together corporate representatives, NGOs, academics and trade unions to discuss how labour standards contribute to the development agenda.

Ergon research paper at ICAC Meeting
Ergon recently presented an overview paper at the 65th Annual Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), identifying some of the key social and labour impacts of cotton cultivation in South Asia, Brazil, West Africa and Central Asia. The ICAC presentation highlighted some of the key issues and outlined potential practical responses for state, private sector and civil society actors in the context of learning from other sectors and perspectives.

Human rights, trade and investment
Amnesty International has recently published a collection of articles entitled Human rights, trade and investment matters. The anthology takes various perspectives on the links – both downward pressures and potential levers for improvements – between capital flows, in the form of trade agreements and institutional finance, and human rights, focusing on labour rights in particular.

ICFTU catalogues trade union repression

Repression, violence and intimidation against trade unionists remain prevalent in many countries according to the annual ICFTU survey of Violations of Trade Union Rights. The report catalogues 115 murders, 1600 violent assaults and 9,000 arrests worldwide during 2005 and highlights Colombia, Iraq, Iran, El Salvador, Djibouti, China, Cambodia, Guatemala, Zimbabwe and Burma as among the worst offenders.

IFC adopts new social and environmental lending standards
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) – part of the World Bank Group - has adopted new environmental and social standards applicable to its financing activities The new rules expand upon the IFC’s existing standards but also include important new sections requiring adherence to labour standards and other human rights and social issues.
