IFC guide on indigenous peoples |
The IFC has published a new guide on ILO Convention 169 and the Private Sector. The guide is intended as a practical guide for IFC clients which operate in countries that have ratified Convention 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. The guide has been prepared in response to the sometimes controversial experiences that IFC has had in recent years with private investments affecting indigenous peoples and their lands in Latin America.
The guide is written in question and answer style and is intended to provide advice to IFC's clients on how the Convention can impact on their operations. Like all ILO Conventions, 169 is aimed at governments. However, the principles underpinning it have relevance for private sector operations. Civil society organisations increasingly use the Convention as a reference point for monitoring private sector operations. Also, government action - or lack of it - in implementing their responsibilities under the Convention can affect private sector companies. IFC has a Performance Standard on Indigenous Peoples which the guide complements. IFC prepared the publication, in close consultation with the ILO and says it hopes it will help to raise awareness about the Convention and its possible implications for private sector companies, and provide added clarity and guidance for IFC clients. |
